Factors Influencing Acute Postoperative Urinary Retention in Patients Undergoing Surgery for Benign Anorectal Disease

Abstract
118 patients who had undergone surgery for benign anorectal disease were studied retrospectively to assess factors influencing the incidence of acute postoperative urinary retention. The age, sex, amount of fluid aminstered perioperatively, type
of
operation, and type of anesthesia were taken into account for variables and analyzed. The stepwise discriminant analysis with PC/SAS revealed that the type of surgery and the amount of fluid had significantly and independently associated with
acute
postoperative urinary retention. The chi-square test for individual variables also showed that hemorrhoidectomy, among the type of surgery and more than 800 ml, as the amount of fluid administered, each produced a significant increase in acute
postoperative urinary retention. The variables of sex and type of anesthesia had significance in individual chi-square test, but not in stepwise discriminant analysis. The variable of age was not significant in both tests.
